History/Personality: History & Personality

Would you consider your character to be heroic? Why or why not?: I would consider Loki to have the capacity to be heroic, should the need arise and also coincide with his desire to do so, but left to his own devices? He's much more of an antihero. He's too selfish and self-concerned to put the well-being of countless unknown others before his own, even though he's doing his level best to turn his own behavior around these days. Caring about known others, and limited quantities thereof? Much more doable.

Canon World

Alright so. The world Loki comes from is a planet called Asgard, which is connected to eight other worlds through a cosmic nexus called Yggdrasil. The Earth of the MCU is one of those eight but is generally considered too low-tech and humans too underdeveloped to be involved in the wider dealings of the other planets connected to Yggdrasil. Asgard in and of itself is somewhat utopic and has been known to be a source of magic, technology, diplomacy, and peace.

Prior to that particular spin on its history, Asgard was a world at war with other planets in the nine realms.

Because of the nature of Yggdrasil, the people of Loki's world have had exposure to alien races and planets, technology that includes ships meant to travel the stars, and people with amazing abilities like magic (just overall) or the ability to pinpoint and locate someone within any of the nine realms.

The setting Loki comes from is pretty fantastical, and he's just been made aware of the existence of other timelines and realities, so really, anything goes.

History

Here's a long link full of spoilers for the show

  • Adopted by Frigga and Odin and raised as their son, a prince of Asgard, along with Thor
  • Is not told he's adopted, spends centuries feeling like an outsider and as if he's trapped in Thor's shadow, finds out he's adopted while fighting Frost Giants on Jotunheim
  • Orchestrates a complicated series of events that involves Thor being banished to Earth, Odin falling into a deep sleep, Loki becoming Regent of Asgard, and the death of the Jotun (whom he held no particular love for) in an attempt to be seen as worthy in Odin's eyes
    - it does not work
  • Loki fakes (ish) his death by falling into the Void, recovers in a place called The Sanctuary, and is offered the rulership over Earth if he can obtain an object called the Tesseract from Earth for Thanos
  • Launches a full-scale invasion of Earth using an alien species called the Chitauri
  • Loses that battle thanks to Thor and the newly-formed Avengers
  • Is captured by the Avengers when time-traveling Avengers arrive to take the Tesseract
  • Uses the ensuing confusion to escape, causing himself to become a Variant in the eyes of the TVA (the Time Variance Authority)
  • Is captured and processed by the TVA and told about all the terrible things he was going to cause including Frigga's death and the destruction of Asgard plus his own death at Thanos' hands
  • Is also shown a few nice things, like joining with Valkyrie and Thor against Hela and saving the people of Asgard
  • Is recruited by the TVA (there is no other option offered him as his timeline is completely gone and he's supposed to be removed from the Sacred Timeline as a result, but recruited is what we'll say) to help find and bring in another Variant of himself who has been picking off TVA agents for some time
  • Makes friends with Mobius, his handler
  • Meets Sylvie (the other Variant)
  • Gets trapped in an apocalypse with her and convinces her that Lokis are all survivors if nothing else, which creates a nexus event within the apocalypse (which should be impossible)
  • Joins forces with her to try to topple the TVA where previously he'd just wanted to take it over
  • Gets Mobius to join with him and Sylvie
  • Sees Mobius get "pruned" (removed) from the Sacred Timeline
  • Confronts the leaders of the TVA with Sylvie only to find out they're automatons and not the real ones running the show
  • Gets himself "pruned" from the Sacred Timeline almost immediately afterward

  • Wakes up in Thedas

Personality

We'll start with the things that are glaringly obvious to someone interacting with Loki:

He's arrogant. As hell, right off the bat. He's very self-involved and incredibly vain. He's also spoiled, if not by circumstances of his raising then by the use of magic to get what he wants or needs immediately when he wants it. He has never washed a dish in his long, long life and it's apparent. He whines when walking a mile. He has a huge ego and tends to behave as if he thinks he's better than anyone he encounters, whether or not that is objectively true, and usually, it's a resounding not. He's extraordinarily hedonist and tends to be pretty horny on main. He is also extremely chaotic in nature, often seeing through a plan in order to see how the chaos and destruction will pan out as opposed to doing what would be best for everyone or anyone involved, including himself.

He is driven by wanting to be told he's good enough, he's smart enough, and gosh darn it people like him. Being told, however, is not enough; he'd have to believe it and being a giant liar himself and thus knowing and believing that everyone else is capable of lying to him at nearly any moment means that isn't always likely to happen. That is the deep internal reasoning, and the doubt that he is any of those things gnaws at him and causes him to lash out. Loki's got layers, and much like an onion that has started to rot on a kitchen countertop, not all of them are great.

I'm a horrible person. I get it. I really am. I cut off your hair because I thought it'd be funny. And it's not. I crave attention, because I'm a narcissist. And I suppose it's because I'm scared of being alone.

On the definitely more difficult to suss out plus side? He is very smart, actually, and possesses the capability to love and care about others. He also possesses the capacity to be... not a hero, exactly, but not always the villain. Loki has only recently begun receiving positive reinforcement from people whose opinions he believes or at least doesn't immediately dismiss out of hand. Internalizing those positive capacities or attributes for himself will take time, and he will backslide into bad behavior because the familiar is comfortable even to a demigod of chaos.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Abilities: There are so many of these and I'm very sorry
  • Increased strength, stamina, speed, agility, durability, heightened senses, longevity (meaning he lives longer than humans) and cold immunity. What it says on the tin; Loki possesses these abilities above and beyond the typical human by virtue of not... being human and being a frost giant who looks like an Asgardian instead.

    Powers:
  • Illusion Manipulation - Loki can make illusions of other people, places, things, (ideas?) that can interact with the world and take up the appearance of actual space. When they are struck or are attacked, however, they are clearly illusions and not real.
  • Presence concealment - like a rogue!type, Loki can make himself or someone else (or both) unseen and unheard, even in combat.
  • Shapeshifting - what it says on the tin: Loki can transform into a version of another person, changing his voice to match the new face and body. He can also turn into a snake.
  • Conjuration - Loki can manifest objects as needed. However, he needs to possess the items before being able to conjure them. Say someone hands him a knife. He can then put it in a pocket universe and call it up through conjuration. If no one gives him a knife, he can't just imagine one up out of nothing.
  • Telekenesis - Loki can move things with his mind! Requires a line of sight, tends to include him reaching for the thing.
  • Energy blasts - Big bright green energy that he can expel through his hands and use to attack others.
  • Resistant to enchantment - or blood magic, as the case may be.

    Skills:
  • Combat-wise, Loki is good at daggers. Like. Scarily good. Considering how long he's been alive and fighting, these skills encompass blades of other sizes as well. He's a pretty good hand-to-hand fighter too.
  • Loki is also very intelligent. Good at keeping track of a lot of moving parts, and also lies. Very good at keeping track of lies.
  • Loki is good at tactics and manipulation.
  • He's also an excellent thief and pickpocket.

    Things Loki is bad at:
  • Emotional honesty
  • Honesty, period
  • Being a team player
  • Not acting pompous on some level
  • Not being the center of attention

    Suggested Nerfs

    Alright, here we go:

Everything under Abilities above, with the exception of cold resistance, will take a willful effort from Loki to activate (so his super strength, agility, etcetera) and I will be using dice rolls in conflicts that call for them so that he's not just... overwhelmingly OP.

I mean he's still OP but you get what I mean.

Illusion Manipulation will have a time limit that is dependent on the size and complexity of the illusion involved. Also, illusions that are touched or attack will not hold their apparent three dimensional-ness. Upon arrival, I'm going to be limiting his ability to cast illusions to five minutes, maximum, with the idea that if he practices and studies the way magic works for him in Thedas, he'll get this to work for longer time periods (with mod approval) over the course of say, six to twelve months in-game.

Presence Concealment will also have a time limit of five minutes with a higher chance to fail the longer he's doing it.

Shapeshifting into other people will also have a time limit of five to ten minutes, with the same caveats as Illusion Manipulation and a higher chance to fail suddenly the longer he's doing it. Shapeshifting into a snake will not have a time limit.

Conjuration as addressed above, only objects that Loki has specifically stored for this ability will work, and I'm limiting his ability to do this by size (objects bigger than him cannot be conjured). Mostly he'll be using it for knives and handkerchiefs and such, so.

Telekenesis will be limited to line-of-sight and objects larger than him he will have trouble managing at first. Any improvement to managing larger objects would take practice and study over a six to twelve-month period.

Energy Blasts will be severely weakened from what we see in canon, to cause 1d10 damage to start. Improving this ability will take practice and study over a course of six to twelve months in-game.

Resistance to Enchantment/Blood Magic will provide him with a resistance bonus to dice rolls involving mind control/enchantment but will not be an immediate failure in the case of the caster.

I am stripping the ability of Allspeak from him entirely for his jaunt in Thedas and am not including Enchantment as he is from before the canon point when he realized it was possible for him to do this.

    Arrival Inventory

Loki will arrive having been dreaming of a warlike conflict from home (Asgard) that bleeds into places in Thedas instead of being located just within his experiences in the Nine Realms. This means he'll be dressed in his Asgardian leather armor and twin daggers. He won't have any other objects or technology on his person upon arrival.

    Humanization

On the appearance end of things, Loki looks like a tol human. In reality, it's a bit more complicated than that (please see Abilities above), but his appearance is not going to change.

    Fit

So first of all, there was a Loki in Riftwatch at one point who was a little different from this one but had/made enemies of course. He's a Loki, what else would one expect? I find that sort of built-in CR opportunity to be really fascinating and I look forward to seeing whose opinions change on Lokis overall and those that don't. I also personally really like the opportunities to take villains from their home realities and place them smack dab in a conflict that will not be easily solved or ignored by the character. Loki has been involved in so few mortal conflicts that he'll be a little thrown to be in this one (and with new limits on his magic too? get the eff outta here). Also, I love giving main characters a chance to be part of a great ensemble supporting cast to a cause.

As far as having two characters from Marvel properties in-game at the same time, I imagine it wouldn't be a conflict as Loki has no idea who Erik is and Erik knows Loki is bad news and will probably avoid him. If they're still too close lemme know and I'll probably ask that Erik be made a side character if possible.

    CHARACTER NAME: Loki
    AGE: between 1-2k years old
    FANDOM: MCU/Disney+
CANON POINT: end of season 1 (D+ show)

ELEVATOR PITCH: Recently, Loki learned a lot of things. About himself, about his need for a "glorious purpose", about loving without being rewarded for it. He's learned about consequences, foreseen and not so much. He gained a few things, tried to turn himself around, did what he thought was the right thing (for once in his life), and then lost those things he gained. Namely the people he loves. It fucking sucks and he's not pleased about it.

For the last several centuries Loki has been doing whatever Loki wants, and screw the consequences. More or less. More: He's done a lot of things in the name of sowing chaos and striving to gain his father's respect in his elder brother's shadow. Complicated by being adopted and not being told about it until he found out on his own. Further complicated by being the God of Lies, certain that he has a glorious purpose beyond just being a crown prince, and an essentially futile attempt at Less: He's a narcissist and a megalomaniac, and in recovery over both of those things.

    Healing is not linear.

He is driven by wanting to be told he's good enough, he's smart enough, and gosh darn it people like him. Being told, however, is not enough; he'd have to believe it, and being a giant liar himself and thus knowing and believing that everyone else is capable of lying to him at nearly any moment means that isn't always likely to happen. That is the deep internal reasoning, and the doubt that he is any of those things gnaws at him and causes him to lash out. Loki's got layers, and much like an onion that has started to rot on a kitchen countertop, not all of them are great.

Despite all his momentum forward, he's still chaotic. He's still without the relatively new support system he had in place for when shit went awry, and shit did go awry. He's more interested in causing trouble than outright harming others, so at least there's that.

He is in love with someone who more or less rejected him, very recently, or at least rejected his stance when it came towards something she'd wanted for possibly longer than he's been alive. He wants her to be okay; he'll be frustrated at not being in a position to do anything about it.

He has one good friend. He just forgot who Loki is. It's fine, everything's... fine.
VAMPIRE ABILITIES: Daywalker, Long Fangs, and Blood Memories

AVOIDED TOPICS: Sexual assault and child abuse. I can deal with either but would rather have them described in vague terms than directly.
